The Philharmonia Orchestra: Santtu conducts Sibelius and Nielsen
About the Event
Immerse yourself in the enchanting melodies of classical music by Sigfúsdóttir, Grieg, and Sibelius at the renowned Southbank Centre in London. The Nordic Soundscapes series kicks off with a powerful performance led by Finnish Principal Conductor Santtu.
María Sigfúsdóttir’s composition "Oceans" sets the tone for the series, exploring Nordic composers’ relationship with nature. Starting with a tranquil and reflective introduction, the music gradually builds in intensity, capturing the majestic forces of the ocean and the winds.
The exceptional pianist Stephen Hough will join the orchestra for Grieg’s Piano Concerto, a beloved piece that brims with passion from the thunderous opening to its triumphant conclusion. As a special treat, the YL Male Voice Choir, which premiered Sibelius’s Kullervo in 1892, will perform this epic work that weaves together Finnish national identity and folklore.
Sibelius’s Kullervo, inspired by the Kalevala, Finland’s national epic, tells a tragic tale of Kullervo’s ill‐fated romance with his sister. The music features sweeping melodies reminiscent of a cinematic epic, intense drama, and impressive vocal performances that promise to leave a lasting impact on the audience.
