The Marriage of Figaro: Seville Opera House

About the Event

Experience opera like never before in this astonishing performance of Mozart's masterwork at Seville's remarkable Teatro de la Maestranza.

Seville, a labyrinth of passion

The experienced and brilliant director Emilio Sagi explains that Seville in The Marriage of Figaro is not just a decorative background, but rather 'another character'. Thus, with the theatrical inspiration of a unique operatic city, Sagi's production of Figaro's Wedding unfolds a labyrinth of passions, infidelities, and conflicts between social classes at the crossroads of 18th‐century change to usher in a new age. This first collaboration between Mozart and his librettist Da Ponte is a marvel of psychological insight, innovative language, and the most beautiful arias that will forever be etched in our memories.

'Figaro's Wedding' is an ensemble piece with a precise mechanism: a highly choral artifact that requires great composition. And that's exactly what the Maestranza is. A compact international team of singers led by baritone Alessio Arduini, soprano Natalia Labourdette and baritone Vittorio Prato. Conductor Corrado Rovaris, music director of the Philadelphia Opera, leads the performance. His astute reading of Donizetti's Don Pasquale was a huge success at the Maestranza in 2019. It all happens under the direction of the always elegant and lucid Emilio Sagi, whom the Teatro de la Maestranza has been eagerly awaiting after failing to stage his long‐awaited vision of Carmen in 2021. Now Sagi returns to Seville to shed light on one of Mozart's enigmas, which continues to reveal new facets even as time passes.
