Teodor Currentzis conducts the SWR Symphony Orchestra, and the program includes symphonic opera paraphrases by Richard Wagner: these few facts suffice to illustrate the exceptional nature of the current event. Wagner himself saw himself as a legitimate successor to Beethoven, and so it stands to reason that Wagner's music should for once be conceived in purely symphonic terms. Currentzis loves such historical references — and will supplement the main works of the evening with a musical Wagner consideration by the Ukrainian‐Russian composer Alexei Retinski.
