Sunday Concerts at Conway Hall: Patrick Hemmerlé

About the Event

Pianist Patrick Hemmerlé's programme is split into two distinct halves. The first portion delves into a spiritual quest, as Bach's pieces convey feelings of anguish and yearning, while Beethoven's final sonata explores the inherent trials of human existence. However, the second movement brings resolution, leaving behind conflict for a sense of stillness and peace.

The second half of the programme transitions to an exploration of Spanish music. Opening with Debussy's Préludes, the essence of Spain is captured in mere minutes. Albeniz's Iberia stands out as a masterpiece that gives Spanish music a vibrant voice, while Séverac's work offers a melancholic interlude of great beauty. Granados' El Pelele, inspired by Goya, closes the programme with unbridled joy.

Diapason praised Hemmerlé for his mastery of musical flow and tonal sonorities. The programme features works by Bach, arranged by Busoni and Hemmerlé, Beethoven's Sonata in C minor Op.111, along with pieces by Debussy, Albeniz, Séverac, and Granados.
