Strauss' semi‐autobiographical tone poem 'A Hero's Life' reflects these shifting sands in its numerous quotations from the composer's previous works. Less familiar are Zemlinsky's powerful Psalms, their lush orchestral and choral textures informed by the Symbolist tastes of the early 20th Century, while Webern's Passacaglia clearly signals the arrival of the New Viennese School.
