About the Event

Discover Bach's famous passion in a new version by Benedikt von Peter at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

The narratives of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the biblical gospels are among the essential foundations of European culture. With the composition of the 'St. Matthew Passion,' Johann Sebastian Bach created a musical ritual for the believing congregation of his time.

In recent years, director Benedikt von Peter has created numerous standard‐setting and award‐winning productions in which he seeks to transfer the respective 'architecture of a piece' to the spaces of the opera houses. In this sense, Benedikt von Peter's production of the 'St. Matthew Passion,' which Bach had already designed as a double choir, will occupy the entire auditorium and the main stage. Thus, there are also seats for visitors on the stage, and formations of choir and orchestra are placed in the visitors' area.

Deutsche Oper Berlin

Deutsche Oper Berlin is the biggest opera house in the German capital, and a member of the Berlin Opera Foundation established in the early 1900s. The original building was destroyed during the Second World War, but was eventually replaced, and the new theater opened in 1961 - six weeks after construction began on the Berlin Wall. Serving West Berlin, its sober, linear design avoids anything that might distract vistiors from the performance. The repertoire of the theater focuses on the great classics such as Mozart, Verdi and Strauss, but frequently presents contemporary opera as well. The Chorus of the Deutsche Oper has been named 'Chorus of the Year' many times for its outstanding performances.
