Somi at Alter Schlachthof Dresden

About the Event

Somi, the jazz and world music vocalist, songwriter and actress with roots in Ruanda and Uganda who lives in the USA, is the first African artist to be nominated for a Grammy Award in the jazz category. Her music breathes the spirit of the legendary Dianne Reeves, of Nina Simone, Letta Mbulu or the mature Dee Dee Bridgewater, merging jazz, soul and the music of her African heritage in a fascinating mélange. Her latest album, »Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba«, is dedicated to the South African singer and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba, who would have turned 90 on March 4, 2022. Somi has given a modern guise to the powerful and multi‐faceted repertoire of the »First Lady of African Song«, demonstrating that Makeba’s messages have lost none of their compelling and moving effect.
