Holy Week and the English Choral Tradition

There are few cities where the English choral tradition is on fuller display than London during Holy Week. Across central London, church choirs and London's professional choral ensembles programme Passions, requiems, and Tenebrae settings throughout the week leading up to Easter. Parish churches such as St Pauls Covent Garden and St. George's Church (Hanover Square) regularly host this kind of repertoire, performed by ensembles whose standards match anything heard in larger venues. Outside Holy Week, the orchestral calendar is itself unusually rich in April — many of the season's big-name visiting conductors are scheduled now, and ticket demand reflects that. Booking two to four weeks ahead is genuinely necessary for the most sought-after performances.

Spring Weather, Long Evenings

Daytime temperatures reach about 14 °C, with evenings near 6 °C. Rain falls on approximately nine days — April showers earn their reputation, but they tend to pass quickly. The lighter evenings change the feel of a concert outing entirely: an early dinner in Covent Garden or Marylebone, a walk through a park, and a concert that ends before the last tube is suddenly very feasible.
