Salome: Deutsche Oper Berlin

About the Event

Richard Strauss's 'Salome' was one of the first literary operas of the 20th century. With this production, Claus Guth gives his directing debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Even after its world premiere in 1896, Oscar Wilde’s tragedy “Salomé” remained a thorn in the eye of the establishment across Europe. Official art adjudicators considered the subject “repulsive” and the text “an insult to morality”. Richard Strauss saw a private performance of Wilde’s play in 1902 and resolved to use Hedwig Lachmann’s prose text as the basis for his composition.

Salome's brutal stepfather, Herod, persuades her to dance for him. Encouraged by her mother, she demands to be given the head of John the Baptist in return.

Sung in German with English and German surtitles
