Bel Canto, the burning ice

Can an earthly power save us from old age and death? Can you force a person to love someone you don't really love? Queen Elizabeth I of England loves Roberto Devereux. But: he loves someone else. With her leadership defeated by heartbreak and decay, the queen falters. She sings, 'I no longer reign, I no longer live…'. Passion and palace conspiracies intertwine in Roberto Devereux (1837), a mature opera by Gaetano Donizetti. The last work in his trilogy of 'Tudor Queens,' Maestranza completes its cycle to coincide with the 225th birthday of the Bergamo composer. The opera is based on historical facts but romanticized into an exaggerated romantic tragedy that demands feverish vocal virtuosity. Canarian Yolanda Auyanet and Jerez tenor Ismael Jordi, a master of bel canto returning to our theater, tackle two of the most demanding roles in the repertoire. Canadian conductor Yves Abel is a specialist in Italian opera, who has had triumphs in Berlin, Vienna and New York. The production is from Welsh National Opera and has been successful at major European opera houses.

Fiery passion, political intrigue, jealousy, abuse of authority and revenge. Love and death in Roberto Devereux, the zenith of bel canto, enters the stage for the first time in La Maestranza.
