Robert Schumann: Genoveva at Kulturpalast Dresden

About the Event

When Robert Schumann presented his first opera »Genoveva« to the public on June 25, 1850, he was sure it would be greeted with enthusiasm. The premiere, however, did not go according to his wishes, and so not only the work, but Schumann’s operatic ambitions in general were buried in a bottom drawer. Unjustly, as the stage work, which can now be rediscovered in a semi‐staged production at the Kulturpalast, offers colourful music and impressive sounds. The medieval legend of St. Genevieve is presented by a first‐rate soloist ensemble, the Arnold Schoenberg Chorus and the much‐lauded Helsinki Baroque Orchestra playing original instruments under the baton of Aapo Häkkinen. A precious rarity, not just for opera lovers.
