The Goldberg Variations occupy place of legendary status in the whole of keyboard literature despite their obscure origin. Popular legend has it that Bach composed them for the young virtuoso Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, that the playing of the pieces might soothe the nights of his insomniac master Duke Keyserling.
