About the Event

Ludwig van Beethoven's monumental Missa solemnis concludes the season. It is one of the most famous masses in Western music and considered the composer's greatest work. Each textual statement was translated into musical form, creating a complexity that shifted focus from the liturgical ceremony to the music itself. Beethoven envisioned the Mass to be performed like an oratorio, as it was during its premiere on April 7, 1824 in St. Petersburg. Since then, the Missa solemnis has been performed in concert halls worldwide, including here at the end of the season.
