Two virtuosos compared. Although with different styles, Paganini and Brahms were two key personalities for the piano between the mid‐nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
In the myth of virtuosity, Rachmaninov 'the pianist with the long fingers' wrote an important piece of History with his Piano Concertos. Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a piece for piano and orchestra and‐somehow‐represents the quintessence of virtuosity: the theme on which it is based is precisely that of the twenty‐fourth and last Capriccio for violin, already used by Liszt and Brahms in their compositions dedicated to the 'diabolical' Paganini. A virtuoso of sounds was also Brahms — the 'genius of the future' according to Robert Schumann — in his chiseling out the counterpoint of melodic lines in his First Symphony: a nearly 20‐year‐long work that would lead to a masterpiece, so much so that it was dubbed Beethoven's 'Tenth Symphony.'
