Mendelssohn, Glasunow, Gershwin: Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin

About the Event

The Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin presents a jazzy program including works by Mendelssohn, Galzunov, Schulhoff, and Gershwin with solo saxophonist Asya Fateyeva, and violinist and leader Gabriel Adorján.

The aged Goethe admired Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy who was just twelve years old and about to finish his seventh String Symphony. The saxophone joined the world of sound in 1840 but this instrument should see only its real hayday in 20th century jazz. Russian composer Alexander Glazunov gave the instrument one of its first “classical” concert compositions – pensive and enchanting. Prague‐born avant‐garde Erwin Schulhoff composed his “Hot Sonata” in which modernity and jazz merge. In his homeland of America, jazz was so rousing and soulful that George Gershwin led it to the opera stage in his “Porgy and Bess”.
