Mendelssohn Elijah: Paris Choral Society with Conductor Zachary Ullery
About the Event
Experience the awe‐inspiring performance of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's 'Elijah' at the extraordinary Cathédrale Américaine in Paris. The Paris Choral Society has showcased numerous masterful oratorios throughout the years, ranging from Bach's traditional Christmas Oratorio to Mendelssohn's romantic compositions. Out of all these magnificent works, 'Elijah' stands as one of the most splendid creations by the composer. With a libretto drawn from the Old Testament, Mendelssohn's oratorio brings humanity to the figure of Elijah, offering a tangible insight into the prophet's faith.
Elijah has often been compared to an opera that Mendelssohn never had the chance to write. It boasts minimal narration, exceptional choruses, and a rich musical‐dramatic dialogue between the characters, emphasizing action over moralization. This work expresses timeless spiritual values, highlighting the significance of endurance, perseverance, and finding hope amidst despair.
Moreover, we will also be performing Nathaniel Dett's enthralling oratorio, 'The Chariot Jubilee'. Believed to be the first symphonic work solely based on African‐American spirituals, this captivating piece was initially written and performed in 1919. However, the orchestration was lost for several decades before being reconstructed 80 years later, allowing for new interpretations, including a performance for Martin Luther King's 70th birthday celebration. The text of the oratorio features spirituals, African‐American folk songs, and verses from the Bible, beautifully sung by both the solo tenor and the choir.
Don't miss the opportunity to witness classical music like never before in this mesmerizing concert featuring 'Elijah' and 'The Chariot Jubilee' at Paris's remarkable Cathédrale Américaine.
