Setting one of Sir Walter Scott's most famous novels, Donizetti's tale of love and betrayal includes an iconic mad scene and a number of arias and ensembles that regularly feature on opera's 'most popular' lists. Two star‐studded casts mix established house soloists with international names including tenor Pavol Breslik, and Nina Minasyan and Tuuli Takala in the title role. Stefano Ranzani conducts at Dresden's exquisite Semperoper.
Despite the ongoing feud between their families, Edgardo and Lucia have fallen deeply in love and hope that their union will lead to reconciliation. Lucia's brother, Enrico, has pledged her hand to another, to benefit his own political and financial ends. Forced to sign the marriage contract, and cursed by Edgardo for her betrayal, Lucia loses her sanity, kills her new husband, and succumbs to her heartbreak. Learning of Lucia's death, Edgardo takes his own life.
