About the Event

Discover Verdi's famous opera 'La forza del destino' in a new version by Frank Castorf at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

The entire work draws its driving force from the polarity of two opposing emotional worlds that dominate the main characters almost obsessively: On the one hand, the supposed guilt for the death of Leonora's father, which weighs on her and her lover Alvaro. On the other hand, there is the thirst for revenge that drives Leonora's brother Carlo to pursue the two of them across all borders. Over the course of three hours, an unconditional chase unfolds that leads the three main characters through a world that is increasingly coming apart at the seams. In wild crowd scenes, we experience a disinhibited society in which only sheer survival counts and violence has replaced any morality. Even the authority of the church, in whose arms Leonora and Alvaro seek shelter, proves to be fragile and inferior to the 'power of fate', the energy of evil.

War and religion are the poles that determine the lives of the people in Verdi's opera. In Frank Castorf's production, this central idea of the play is made visible by locating it in the Spanish Civil War and in Naples during the Second World War.
