About the Event

Relish the wit of women! Rossini's titular heroine conquers all before her in a flurry of vocal fireworks and cunning plans. Embarked on a rescue mission to save her beloved Lindoro, Isabella is capture by the Bey of Algiers, who is on the lookout for an Italian girl of spirit to add to his too‐compliant harem. Perhaps he should have been more careful what he wished for!
Gioachino Rossini was a prodigious Italian composer of the 19th century. He made his professional debut at the age of 18, and soon became one the most popular opera composers in history. His best known operas are 'The Barber of Seville' (Il barbiere di Siviglia), 'The Italian Girl in Algiers' (L'italiana in Algeri), and 'Cinderella' (La Cenerentola). Rossini's highly melodic style earned him the nickname of 'the Italian Mozart”. As his style developed, he became famous for the technique of building up orchestral sound over a repeated phrase, which is now known as a 'Rossini crescendo”.
