About the Event

In 2014, Chi‐chi Nwanoku, a double bass player with Nigerian roots, was confronted with a reality she had accepted as a given: the lack of Black musicians in orchestras. This inquiry by the British Ministry of Culture prompted her to conceive an idea for a foundation that would support an ethnically diverse orchestra. Thus, Chineke! was born. The unique and exceptional qualities of this orchestra are evident from its debut at London's Southbank Centre in 2015. The name itself, Chineke, holds significance as it represents "God, creator of the world and goodness" in the Nigerian Igbo language. The orchestra caused a stir and was later invited to perform at the prestigious BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in 2017. Since then, the ensemble has achieved great success and now graces international stages. It is with much anticipation and excitement that the ensemble will be performing at the Dresdner Musikfestspiele, accompanied by the talented American violinist, Elena Urioste. Together, they will present Max Richter's modern adaptation of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons".
