The final instalment of the series dedicated to Liszt’s transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies features Numbers 2, 4, 5 and 6 – works whose »originals« represented wildly different statements, but all of which are an integral part of the great Viennese classical composer’s legacy to this day. The merging of Beethoven’s ideas with the arrangements by this titan of the keyboard enables listeners to experience the originally symphonic works in a totally different manner. They can discover novelty within familiar sounds, marvelling not only at Beethoven’s universal musical idiom, but also at Liszt’s ability to recognize the core content of the works and lend the piano a truly orchestral sensibility.
