Così fan Tutte: Komische Oper Berlin

About the Event

Experience opera like never before in this astonishing performance of Mozart's dramma giocoso at Berlin's remarkable Komische Oper Berlin.

Mozart's 'School of Lovers' covers the whole range of interpersonal feelings — and returns to the Komische Oper Berlin in a production by Kirill Serebrennikov!

Two couples, an obscure call to the army and a dubious string‐puller are the ingredients of this cheerful drama: actually freshly in love and engaged, Ferrando and Guglielmo separate from their partners Fiordiligi and Dorabella to go to war. Because they (apparently) fall in battle there, the women are left behind in their grief and find their way back to life in very different ways. Or was it all a set‐up by the men in the end?

Kirill Serebrennikov's production dissects the states of mind of the two women, how they deal with grief and the physical desire between two people, making Mozart's masterpiece more sensual to experience than ever before.
sensually than ever. The feminine 'tutte' in the title, literally, 'this is how all women(!) do it', becomes in Serebrennikov's work a universal round dance of images that combines the complexity of attraction, grief, fidelity and sex of a modern relationship with Mozart's music. The work does not condemn any of the characters, but allows the audience a deep look into the hearts of four lovers.

The production by the Russian director Serebrennikov was created in 2018 at the Zurich Opera House, staged via video transmissions from his former house arrest in Moscow and with the support of his long‐time collaborators. For the Komische Oper Berlin, Così fan tutte is the prelude to a Da Ponte trilogy, the three operas Mozart wrote with his outstanding librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte: Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni.
