Concierto de Aranjuez and Beethoven's Third: Barcelona Symphony Orchestra & Juan Manuel Cañizares

About the Event

Tonight's program is a treat. Not only does it feature Beethoven's magnificent Symphony No. 3, the "Eroica", the audience will also enjoy the classical guitar playing of Juan Manuel Cañizares.

With his Third Symphony, Beethoven left everyone speechless; no one had ever heard a work like it. Could symphonic music really say so many things? Beethoven showed that it could. The “Eroica” marked a turning point in the history of music, from which there would be no turning back.

His deafness had begun to affect him seriously at the time of the symphony's composition. He closed himself off and the result was the most impressive work ever written up until that time. It was an utterly defiant statement of “I’m not finished, quite the contrary!” And although initially some critics called it “ponderous and never ending”, time has proved its stature and today it is considered one of the most important symphonic works in history.

Lorenzo Viotti, winner of the Conductors’ Competition in Cadaqués, completes the programme with the work by Hèctor Parra that won him the award, and the most popular guitar concerto in the international repertoire: the Concierto de Aranjuez, by Joaquín Rodrigo from Sagunto.
