Seville Opera House: Luisa Fernanda
Seville, Teatro de la Maestranza — Sala Principal
About the Event
Experience the timeless beauty of Spanish zarzuela with the enchanting performance of 'Luisa Fernanda' at Teatro de la Maestranza.
Emilio Sagi, the stage director of this now‐legendary *Luisa Fernanda*, describes Moreno Torroba’s most popular work as “a story of emotions.” It is true that the atmosphere surrounding it shapes the development of the plot. But neither the historical context (the turbulent Spain of 1868) nor the unmistakable traditionalism it exudes (albeit highly stylized, as demonstrated by the elegant parasol mazurka) are as relevant as the protagonist’s romantic dilemma—her emotional struggle between Javier, exciting and seductive, and Vidal, respectable and suitable. Duchess Carolina makes it possible to resolve this love triangle.
Absent from the Maestranza’s program since 2012, it is presented in the Teatro Real production that has toured with great success on stages around the world. The title’s undeniable appeal is complemented by a spectacular cast led by four of the finest voices on the Spanish opera scene—a perfect blend of youth and experience on stage—under the musical direction of Jordi Bernàcer. One of the most inspired zarzuelas—a true gem of the genre—blessed here by the “Sagi touch” and presented under ideal artistic conditions, it will once again thrill longtime fans and enchant newcomers alike.
