Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo at Teatro de la Maestranza
Seville, Teatro de la Maestranza — Sala Principal
About the Event
Prepare to be dazzled as the renowned Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo take the stage at Teatro de la Maestranza.
Treating serious matters—even the most sacred ones—with a sense of humor is a way of acknowledging their significance. Letting in a breath of fresh air lightens the weight of tradition and allows us to view from a different perspective what we thought we knew so well. Each production by Les Ballets Trockadero offers a refreshing reexamination of the stereotypes and codes of the most academic forms of dance. The company, founded in New York by classical dancers, has been turning the repertoire on its head for over 50 years. The show they’re bringing to the Teatro de la Maestranza is a fine example of the “Trocks’” legendary irreverence.
Four choreographies, each based on a different source, that blow the conventions of classical and romantic ballet sky‐high. Swan Lake, Go for Barocco (set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach), The Death of the Swan, and the Minkus/Petipa classic Paquita are given a distorted interpretation that pushes irreverence to the point of transforming the original. For the parody to work, it requires an exhaustive knowledge of the original, technical mastery at the highest level, and an absolute love for dance. And the complicity of an audience willing to laugh at the most sacred of traditions.
