About the Event

The title that cellist Janos Starker bestowed upon conductor Georg Solti could be applied to Grigory Sokolov: the answer to the global energy crisis. And not because his recitals are sensationalist or showy. On the contrary. Those who have experienced them know the atmosphere of deep concentration in which each concert unfolds, akin to a liturgy or a ritual. And it is this profound sense of reverence, shared by both the soloist and the audience, that generates and concentrates such a vast and intense amount of energy in the concert hall that it could serve as an alternative to fossil fuels.

Added to this is the almost feverish anticipation preceding any of his appearances and the discretion of a musician who, in these times prone to self‐promotion, keeps his media profile to a minimum. His artistry takes shape at the piano, through musical journeys marked by expressive depth, absolute control of sound, the orchestral dimension of the instrument, and extreme attention to detail. Sokolov serves the score where others seem to use it for their own ends.

From the performer’s honesty emerges a certain artistic truth that returns to the Teatro de la Maestranza on one of those rare occasions of direct communion with music.
