Explained. Experienced! | Do you know Marx? im Wiener Musikverein
About the Event
Admittedly, Joseph Marx did not have a good reputation among the younger generation at the time. The composer, teacher, critic, and functionary in post‐war Austria, who died in 1964, was considered overly conservative and backward‐looking. Now, there are increasing signs that the time is ripe for a fair assessment, even a rediscovery, of Marx's music. Its quality is based on a personal blend of the Bach‐inspired artistry of Max Reger, the impressionistic values of Claude Debussy, and the harmonious, mystical boldness of Alexander Scriabin. This fascinates Fabien Gabel, among others: together with the musicians and in conversation with Albert Hosp, the chief conductor demonstrates how enchanting the “Symphonic Night Music” sounds. The answer to the question posed in the title can only be: yes!
