The period ensemble Al Ayre Español and its conductor and harpsichordist Eduardo López Banzo again captivate audiences with the revival of an intriguing early score by Alessandro Scarlatti, composed during his formative Roman years: the oratorio Il martirio di Santa Teodosia. Music of striking beauty and dramatic intensity, it recounts the sacrifice of the young Theodosia, who, guided by steadfast faith, rejects the love of Arsenius, son of Roman governor Urbanus, and faces execution. Research by eminent musicologist López Banzo suggests that the work, reflecting strong influences from Bernardo Pasquini and Alessandro Stradella, was probably premiered in 1684 under the patronage of Christina, Queen of Sweden. Its final madrigal is profoundly moving.
