The Magic Flute at Estonian National Opera
Tallinn, Estonian National Opera — Theatre Hall
About the Event
Capture the magic of Mozart's The Magic Flute at the Estonian National Opera in Tallinn, an unmissable experience of breathtaking opera.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's final opera, 'The Magic Flute,' debuted in Vienna in 1791 and follows the grand tradition of Viennese magical theatre. It's an enigmatic piece that defies easy categorization: Is it an allegory of secret societies or a sensory spectacle? Regardless, it stands as a masterpiece, melding fairy‐tale creatures, humorous antics, and profound ideas of humanity and enlightenment with Mozart’s divine melodies.
'The Magic Flute' juxtaposes opposing forces: the dark domain of the Queen of the Night and the illuminated realm of the wise Sarastro. The manipulative Queen directs Prince Tamino to rescue her daughter Pamina, held captive in Sarastro's enlightened realm. As the prince ventures forth, aided by his magic flute and loyal friend, birdcatcher Papageno, he seeks truth, love, and enlightenment. Tamino achieves enlightenment in Sarastro’s realm, causing the retreat of darkness. The endearing Papageno, though failing Sarastro’s tests, wins the heart of his beloved Papagena and they live happily ever after.
This final work of Mozart is filled with sophistication, weaving together some of his most exquisite and cherished melodies in a graceful allegory. Yet, its wicked queens and noble princes merely hint at the depth of the story.
