About the Event

Mozart's initial partnership with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte began with 'Le nozze di Figaro.' This collaboration soon led to the creation of 'Don Giovanni' and 'Così fan tutte.' Da Ponte adapted a controversial play by Pierre Beaumarchais, which was banned in Vienna due to its depiction of servants outsmarting their aristocratic masters. However, Da Ponte placed less emphasis on the original satire, focusing instead on the enduring themes of comedy. After its successful premiere in Vienna, the opera became a major hit in Prague a few months later, marking a significant triumph for Mozart and resulting in the commission to create 'Don Giovanni.'

Mozart's score is both sunny and sublime, featuring a lively overture, expertly crafted arias, and dynamic ensemble scenes that captivated its early audiences. Encores became so frequent that after the third performance, the emperor restricted encores to arias only, ensuring the performance remained of reasonable length.
