About the Event
Experience the awe‐inspiring architecture of Tallinn's Estonian National Opera, a stunning venue for an unforgettable concert that will deepen your appreciation of opera.
Renowned Argentine tenor, composer, conductor, and director José Cura is set to grace the Estonian National Opera with the much‐awaited Estonian debut of “Peter Grimes,” a psychological thriller by Benjamin Britten. This compelling opera stands as a cornerstone of 20th‐century English music theatre, demonstrating Britten's brilliance in delving into profound human emotions and social conflict.
Set in a coastal village, “Peter Grimes” narrates the haunting tale of fisherman Peter Grimes, who encounters social ostracism and suspicion after being acquitted of murder. Despite the verdict, the close‐knit community remains distrustful, engulfing him in continual gossip, fear, and prejudice. Themes of isolation, judgment, and societal intolerance's destructive power are explored against the sea’s raw, unpredictable backdrop, symbolizing both external pressures on Grimes and his inner turmoil.
Premiered in 1945, Britten's opera is not merely compelling storytelling but a musical masterpiece. Its deeply emotive score captures the sea's menace, Grimes’s inner struggle, and community tensions, establishing Britten among the 20th century's top opera composers.
In this rendition, Cura teams up with longtime collaborator Silvia Collazuol, an Italian costume and stage designer. Together, they vividly bring Britten's intense, dramatic world to life, with gripping emotional depth and a poignant portrayal of Grimes’s tragic journey. The production promises a powerful human exploration, highlighting Britten's opera's haunting beauty.
