About the Event

Immerse yourself in the stunning architecture of Tallinn's breathtaking Estonian National Opera for Charon, an opera by Andrus Kivirähk and Tõnis Kaumann, telling the tale of the boatman who defied the rules. The opera unfolds in the underworld, as depicted in ancient Greek myths, within the realm of Hades, the god of death. For eternity, Charon has ferried the souls of the deceased across the underworld's river, dutifully serving his master. Yet, an encounter with Niobe, a young and captivating soul, sparks the unexpected—Charon falls in love. Niobe reciprocates his feelings, resulting in her pregnancy. Although Niobe wishes to stay with Charon, he desires their child to be born among the living. Defying the natural order, Charon, with Hypnos's assistance, helps Niobe escape the underworld through the domain of the god of sleep. But Hades soon discovers the missing soul and threatens Charon with dire consequences.

As is typical for operas, this whirlwind of events provides ample occasions for emotional investment, tears and laughter, and breathless anticipation for the unexpected ending.
