About the Event
Framed by Sydney Harbour and the unmistakable sails of the Opera House, The Elixir of Love invites travellers into one of opera’s most delightful romantic comedies. Gaetano Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore follows lovestruck Nemorino as he woos spirited Adina, believing a mysterious potion will win her heart.
Just one sip is all it takes…
Take one shy shepherd and one clever woman, add scheming and rivalry, stir in misunderstandings and what do you get? The Elixir of Love!
Nemorino is too timid to ask radiant Adina out, but when a handsome young soldier wins her attention, he decides to act. After purchasing liquid courage (yes, the elixir of love) and blundering through hilarious mishaps, the story ends with a happy couple. But who?
Donizetti’s sparkling opera celebrates high notes and high jinks, while Australian theatre royalty Simon Phillips brings the laughs in this beloved production. A set crafted entirely from corrugated iron (including mountains, sheep, power lines and chickens) meets Gabriela Tylesova’s beautiful painterly costumes, creating an iconic vision of outback Australia in 1915.
Expect romance, laughter and dazzling singing in this operatic gem, starring Stacey Alleaume in a triumphant return from Europe for her role debut as Adina. See one of the world’s most exciting young conductors, Danila Grassi, make her Opera Australia debut in the pit.
