La Bohème at Sydney Opera House
Sydney, Sydney Opera House — Joan Sutherland Theatre
About the Event
They have love. They have art. They have one another. But poetry cannot feed you, and philosophy offers little warmth in a bitter winter.
This beloved opera of young artists suspended between ecstasy and heartbreak has inspired generations of Bohemian romances. Now, a vibrant new production brings this timeless story to life, shaped by an exceptional team of young creatives. Constantine Costi leads the artists in a fresh La Bohème, set in snow‐dusted Paris and glowing with enchantment.
Puccini’s music expresses what words cannot. It rises with the force of first love, flares with jealousy, whispers through passion and shatters with sorrow. This is opera that celebrates love’s power, youth’s beauty and the exhilarating joy of being alive.
Our esteemed Music Director, Andrea Battistoni, and award‐winning conductor Matteo Dal Maso reveal every tender shade of Puccini’s score, joined by a stellar cast: Maria Teresa Leva, Samantha Clarke and Jennifer Black share the role of Mimì, while rising Italian star Matteo Desole plays Rodolfo alongside Paride Cataldo and Iain Henderson.

Giacomo Puccini
Giacomo Puccini, hailing from Italy, rose to prominence as an opera composer in the late 19th century. He ranks just below Verdi in terms of esteem within the pantheon of Italian Opera composers. Initially, Puccini's compositions echoed the romantic nuances typical of 19th-century Italian opera. Over time, however, he embraced the verismo style of realism, leading him to create his most celebrated works and establishing him as a key figure in that genre. His acclaimed operas, including La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900), Madama Butterfly (1904), and Turandot (1924), continue to grace the stages of the world’s most esteemed classical music venues.
