The Spirit of Gambo: Fireworks in the twilight darkness

About the Event

The advent of the violin family in the Baroque era marked the decline of the viola da gamba. However, composers from both England and the mainland made a final stand for the instrument. In England, notable figures such as Lawes, Locke, and Purcell elevated consort music to its peak, while icons like Charpentier and Legrenzi made their mark on the mainland. The Spirit of Gambo takes the ripest fruits of the gambare repertoire and combines them with transcriptions of Bach and Cabanilles.

The strength of gamba consort The Spirit of Gambo lies in their exuberant playing, drive, and musicianship. Their repertoire spans from the seventeenth to the eighteenth centuries and includes works by Dowland, Purcell, and Bach, among others. Freek Borstlap and Gesina Liedmeier, along with regular players Ivanka Neeleman and Thomas Baeté, are the driving forces behind this ensemble. Liedmeier has specially crafted viols for the group. In recognition of their CD's performance of Jenkins' consort music of four parts, The Spirit of Gambo was awarded the Diapason d'Or.
