The Marriage of Figaro at Sydney Opera House
About the Event
Grab the chance to witness a stunning opera performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro at the iconic Sydney Opera House.
The plot unfolds into a hilarious frenzy of mistaken identities on Figaro and Susanna's wedding day, offering a masterclass in comedy. The lively, clever script and catchy melodies explain why this beloved Mozart opera remains a favorite worldwide.
This opera is a showcase of ensemble brilliance, featuring exquisite trios, quartets, and a remarkable sextet woven into the music. In terms of drama, it delivers everything: romance and intrigue, schemes and masquerades, passion and humor.
The narrative centers on the Countess's love for Count Almaviva, who, however, is infatuated with her maid, Susanna. On her wedding day, Susanna, together with Figaro, navigates through a thicket of deception and lust to outsmart the amorous Count.
Featuring international talents Gordon Bintner and Michael Sumuel making their Australian debuts, the stage also hosts renowned Australian artists Kiandra Howarth, Siobhan Stagg, Emily Edmonds, and Jane Ede.
Under Sir David McVicar’s direction, the production becomes a vibrant 'comic cauldron of sex and social politics' (Limelight), where the humor bites with a dark, incisive edge.
Historical costume expert Jenny Tiramani dresses the cast in period‐appropriate attire, adorning the nobles in sumptuous silks and the servants in soft cornflower blue. David Finn enhances the setting with his luminous lighting that transitions from day to night, casting the grand spaces in both sunshine and moonlight.
