The Four Seasons by Vivaldi in Naples

About the Event

Experience chamber music like never before in this astonishing performance of masterworks by Antonio Vivaldi at Naples's remarkable Complesso Monumentale Donnaregina.

Music has long been used to evoke the moods and changes of the four seasons, and in the Baroque period, composers like Werner and Fischer produced cycle of concertos on this theme. However, none accomplished this task with such precise and vivid detail as Antonio Vivaldi did in his 'Four Seasons' concerto.

The Baroque era was characterized by a deep fascination with the incredible natural transformations brought about by the changing seasons, as evidenced by the works of artists like Bernini, who depicted them in their sculptures. This period saw a dramatic shift in the relationship between humanity and nature, prompted in part by Galileo's discoveries, which revealed that man was no longer at the center of the universe. As a result, people began to view nature with a sense of awe and wonder.

Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' is a masterpiece of its time, perfectly capturing the sense of astonishment brought about by nature's power through his stunning musical language. His compositions are characterized by unusual melodies, heightened rhythms, and increased harmonic contrast, resulting in a freer, more fluid style that allows the music to better describe the story it wishes to tell. Each scene is vividly brought to life, from the joyful chirping of birds in spring to the icy chill and rain of winter. By dramatically portraying nature in this way, Vivaldi invites his audience to become fully engaged in the rapid succession of events unfolding within his art.

The evocative power of Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' is on full display at the Museo Diocesano of Naples. This revolutionary work of Italian Baroque music, performed by the Opera e Lirica Academy's strings quintet and harpsichord, is a testament to the enduring power of music to capture the beauty and wonder of the natural world.

The stunning Donnaregina Monumental Complex — Diocesan Museum of Naples is an extraordinary place as it offers an interesting and unique itinerary between Gothic and Baroque right in the heart of the city of Naples. The Complex includes both the seventeenth‐century Chiesa Nuova, within which the museum in the strict sense has its headquarters, and the fourteenth‐century Chiesa Vecchia, a rare example of the Neapolitan Gothic style. It also hosts a collection of paintings, bronzes and relics from the archbishop's palace and other places of worship in the city. Of particular value is the Stauroteca di San Leonzio, a reliquary cross with a fragment of the Holy Cross in filigree gold from the 12th century. The Opera and Lirica concerts are hosted in the marvelous New Church entirely decorated with gilded stuccos typical of the Neapolitan Baroque and forming part of the Complex.
