The Flower Girl: Pibada Opera Company
About the Event
The Flower Girl is a ground‐breaking opera created and first performed in northeast China. The tragic story centres on Huani, the flower girl, whose family struggles with poverty and a troubled destiny under Japanese occupation.
The Flower Girl, Huani, and her family must work endlessly for their landlord in order to pay off two buckets of millet. China's troubles under the Japanese occupation are highlighted.
The Flower Girl was composed in 1930 and first performed 42 years later. The opera has been performed over 1400 times over the last 30 years, warmly received both in China and also in the former Soviet Union, France, Italy, Germany, Algeria and Japan. The opera has also been made into a novel and a film.
