The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater in Barcelona
About the Event
Enjoy a brilliant perfomance by The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, one of the leading dance company of the United States, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu on Barcelona´s famed avenue Las Ramblas.
The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater was founded in New York in 1958. Made up of Afro‐American dancers, its creation changed the perception of modern American dance forever.
In 2008 the United States Congress designated the company as «a vital American cultural ambassador to the world». This definition is ratified by its 23 million spectators, spread over 71 countries and five continents.
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to the Liceu ten years after its memorable debut there with a varied programme that constitutes a manifesto of its own distinctive style: a dovetailing of the singularity of the Afro‐American cultural experience with modern dance as it evolved in the United States in the 20th century. The audience will have a new chance to enjoy Revelations, a title from the previous programme that has become the troupe's worldwide visiting card. This masterpiece will be rounded off by Festa Barroca -- a re‐reading of the sensibility of 17th century dance which poses a major technical challenge for the performers -- and Love Stories, a tribute to the historical link between dance and the Afro‐American community. The eclectic choreography mingles hip‐hop with Caribbean sensuality, and contemporary dance with the company's African roots.
