Somnakaj — a folk tale, at the Budapest Spring Festival

About the Event

A night such as those sung of in ballads.

The embers of a slowly dying fire glimmer softly. Somewhere in the distance, a violinist plays an ancient Roma song. Tremulous silhouettes emerge, and as they come closer the stomping of the dancers becomes distinct. More and more instruments join in, and three men split from the group of dancers, with the old Sztágyi in the lead. He has news to deliver: Gojma has returned from afar, and wants to found a family. His first visit is to his old friend, Somnakaj. It has been a while since they last met, and she has grown into a woman whom Gojma immediately finds attractive. Old Mrs Zsáró cannot but notice how he has fallen for the one‐time tomboy, the ravishing young lady.
