Sebastiaan Kemner & Club Church
About the Event
The Noorderkerk Concerts Foundation hosts an annual series of 30 highly successful concerts in the Noorderkerk, featuring top musicians from around the world. These concerts showcase a diverse range of musical repertoire. However, due to heating issues at the Noorderkerk this winter, the foundation had to find an alternate venue. Fortunately, the cultural sector came together and the De Waalse Kerk gladly stepped in to host some of these magnificent concerts.
Experience the freedom of expression with the presence of a higher power. Club Church, inspired by a renowned queer nightclub in Amsterdam, presents a unique musical performance that explores the convergence of the sacred and the profane. This juxtaposition creates an intriguing atmosphere in which to let go and be one's authentic self.
For many individuals within the queer community, Club Church serves as a safe space for self‐discovery and self‐expression. However, there is also a sense of shame associated with it. The lively and vibrant parties held at Club Church tend to challenge societal norms, particularly those upheld by religious groups. Trombonists Sebastiaan Kemner and Andrew Macleod, alongside electronic performer Zeynep Oktar, delve into the intricate relationship between religion and queerness. Through the backdrop of a nightclub ambiance and with music spanning centuries, they effortlessly transgress boundaries of genre and style.
