Mozart's ingenious version of one of the cruelest periods of Roman history.
The dictator Cornelius Lucius Sulla had all his aristocratic opponents executed. In Mozart's opera Silla is merciful towards his opponent Cecilio.
Mozart was comissioned by the Teatro Regio Ducale in Milan to write this opera for the carneval season in 1772.
