London Symphony Orchestra: Berlioz and Idefix at Festspielhaus Baden‐Baden

About the Event

They were virtuosos: Hector Berlioz in the 19th century and Pierre Boulez in the 20th century. Both great “B's” liberated music from traditional rituals. Berlioz recalled Lord Byron's pirate novel “The Corsair” and thus also bowed to the free spirit Byron, whose daughter Ada Lovelace was already writing computer programs at the beginning of the 19th century. Pierre Boulez was considered a math genius. In his work “Mémoriale”, he assigns fixed sound spaces to various wind instruments, in which they then develop a “life of their own”. They become the “explosante‐fixe” of the work, which takes us straight back to Berlioz's “Symphonie fantastique”, which is dedicated to the musical “idée fixe”. Idefix? That's exactly who reminds us of Berlioz in the comic.
