Winner of BBC Young Musician 2012, dazzling cellist Laura van der Heijden joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for Walton’s Cello Concerto – the piece with which she won the title, aged only 15. Works by Holst and Elgar are also featured on the programme.
With its singing, complex cello part and rich orchestral writing, Walton’s Concerto is the perfect vehicle for Laura van der Heijden’s unique gifts. Framing Walton’s powerful music are gems by his fellow Englishmen: a witty overture from Vaughan Williams, the hauntingly beautiful A Song of the Night by Holst, featuring acclaimed violinist Clio Gould, and Elgar’s incomparable ‘Enigma’ Variations.
As one of the world's foremost ensembles, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra continues to delight audiences with its performances of classical masterpieces. The orchestra will be joined by a host of oustanding artists all of whom are renowned for their destinctive interpretations of classical music.
