Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Joana Mallwitz with Elisabeth Leonskaja

About the Event

In this highly‐anticipated concert, hear the mellifluous sounds of classical music by Antonín Dvořák, Edvard Grieg and Zoltán Kodály at Berlin's treasured and world‐renowned Konzerthaus.

In the tribute event 'Homage to Elisabeth Leonskaja,' the Konzerthausorchester, under the direction of principal conductor Joana Mallwitz, will showcase musical pieces from Bohemia, Norway, and Hungary.

Edvard Grieg struggled with the idea of ever declaring a piece truly 'finished.' Remarkably, the Norwegian composer only ever released one piano concerto to the public. He crafted this concerto in 1868 while visiting Denmark with his wife Nina. Yet, his inspiration was drawn from another influential figure in his life: the renowned pianist Clara Schumann. Grieg had previously been captivated by Clara's rendition of the A minor Piano Concerto composed by her husband, Robert Schumann, during his time as a student in Leipzig. This admiration left an indelible mark on Grieg.

The distinguished Elisabeth Leonskaja will be the featured soloist performing Grieg's piece at the event. Accompanying the piano concerto, the program also includes Antonín Dvořák's folklore‐inspired 'Noonday Witch,' along with Zoltán Kodály's vibrant and vividly orchestrated 'Dances from Galánta' and the 'Háry János' suite.
