Jonas Kaufmann, Diana Damrau & Helmut Deutsch at Philharmonie

About the Event

Opera super stars Jonas Kaufmann and Diana Damrau perform with pianist Helmut Deutsch at the prestigious Philharmonie Berlin.

She is known as the “queen of coloratura”, he as the “king of tenors”. When the two share the stage, it becomes truly royal. “A song recital of a very special class”, judges ARD. Tenor Jonas Kaufmann and soprano Diana Damrau have once again created an evening of songs about love together — with works by Mahler and Strauss.

With his romantic settings of poems from Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano's collection “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”, Gustav Mahler created a poetically inspiring image of life. Several songs are conceived as a dialog between man and woman. Mahler thus draws on the traditional style of the ballad with its very own style of performance: telling a story and presenting it vividly.

Duets and solo songs, performed alternately by the two audience favorites, tell of longing, love and suffering — and show how well Kaufmann and Damrau harmonize, and not just vocally. The two singing royalty are supported by Jonas Kaufmann's long‐time accompanist, the brilliant “piano magician Helmut Deutsch, whom many lieder singers swear by” (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
