About the Event

'O Christmas Play Cleaner Than the Days' is an inviting, thought‐provoking program, which uses jest and poetry to tell and play music around the theme of Christmas. The story, narrated by Maartje van Weegen or Alice Zwolschen, takes us to Brink Hall on the village square where the local drama society is busy preparing for its annual Christmas performance. Els and Mirjam have a vicious battle over who gets to play the role of the first angel, and business manager Freek is much less stress‐resistant than he thought. Caterer Jaap quits the day before the performance because he may have been poisoned by his own food. The solution eventually comes from unexpected quarters, and actually Jesus' grandmother never doubted it….
Accompanied by her baroque ensemble Tulipa Consort, Johannette Zomer, along with singers Linde Schinkel and Marian Dragt, frames the story with the most beautiful Christmas classics by Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Handel and Bach. And pianist Bert van den Brink or pianist Hans Eijsackers, together with bassist Marcel Booij, take care of the accompaniment of the lighter repertoire, which includes English, Spanish and French Christmas songs. With the closing song Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas everything melts together.
