J. Brahms Requiem at St. Stephen’s Cathedral

About the Event

Let yourself be moved by Brahms' Requiem, a masterpiece of choral music and one of the most important sacred works in the history of music.

The renowned music critic Eduard Hanslick raved about this work, stating, 'Since Bach's Mass in B minor and Beethoven's Missa solemnis, nothing has been written that could stand alongside Brahms' German Requiem in this field.' It was this Requiem that enabled Brahms' breakthrough and would become one of his most popular compositions.

The music of the Requiem reflects the intentions and personal anguish of the composer, who had lost his mother shortly before. In selecting the texts, Brahms did not follow the traditional canon of the Requiem as a requiem mass, but chose from texts of the Old and New Testaments in the version of the Luther Bible primarily those in which the consolation of the bereaved is central. Brahms conceived his German Requiem not as funeral music, but as consolation for the mourners — as music for the living, carried by seriousness, dignity and confidence.

The Collegium Musicum Berlin, supported and sponsored by Freie Universität and Technische Universität Berlin, is dedicated to the diversity of vocal and instrumental music. Under the direction of Donka Miteva and with soloists Marlene Metzger (soprano) and Christian Oldenburg (baritone), the Collegium Musicum Berlin looks forward to performing the Brahms Requiem in the unique atmosphere of St. Stephen's Cathedral.
