Il Tabarro: Teatro Comunale di Bologna
About the Event
In the initial station of the Triptych, tragedy and despair dominate the narrative. Humanity is depicted as adrift on the barges of the Seine, filled with unfulfilled desires and lingering regrets. Frugola, a mature woman, yearns for a simple life—a small house, a vegetable garden, and the companionship of a cat. Giorgetta, at only twenty‐five years old, already carries the deep pain of losing her young son. She is more than a mere Madame Bovary, trapped between a loveless marriage and newfound passions. Her failed relationship with Michele adds to her unspoken anguish. The flowing river, much like life itself, carries the gloomy destinies of these characters who reside along its banks. The first opera of Puccini's Triptych is infused with a naturalist pessimism, bordering on expressionism in its vivid, somber musical undertones. As Michele's disappointment festers, he becomes the murderer of his wife's lover, plunging the world of the downtrodden into catastrophe. The tension reaches its peak as the ancient gesture of affection—the embrace—transforms into the grim discovery of a lifeless body.
