Heavenly Winds: Chicago Chamber Musicians
About the Event
The CCM brass players perform a double‐bill of jubilant and heavenly music by two contemporary composers: Garrop, and STephenson. Works by Mozart and Mahler are also featured on the program.
The Trumpets at Jericho, a CCM commission, portrays the infamous event in which trumpeters 'circle the walls of Jerico seven times and triumphantly bring down the walls amidst trumpet blasts' (Stacy Garrop). The Celestial Suite for brass quintet brings out the energy and fire of CCM's own distinctive brass sound as it builds to a trancendent finish. Celebrated oboist Alex Klein joins CCM in two Mozart works. The charming Divertimento is lighthearted, lovely, and skillfully written. The dramatic Serenade, the only one in a minor key, employs pairs of oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and horns in an atypical 'indoor' serenade.
A Britten Celebration
To honor the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth, CCM is taking part in a yearlong, global 'Britten 100' tribute. This remarkable British composer was known for his extraordinary versitality and vast output. The 2013/2014 season includes programs that underscore his dazzling talents. You'll hear music of many moods, for different instruments, influenced by wide‐ranging composers and artists.
